Appeal for Funds for Indigenous Land Defender

Dear support of Land Defenders

As so many of you know, Kanahus Freedom Manuel is a tireless warrior who has been standing up for indigenous sovereignty her whole life. She is constantly on the front line of the struggle at great personal cost to herself and her family.

She has recently been spending time at the Standing Rock water protection camp, working tirelessly to get the message of that struggle out to all of us who cannot be there physically to support.

Kanahus will be coming back to her community this week and is in need of a vehicle to get her back to Standing Rock.

We are sending this note as a call to you all to contribute what you can to the purchase of a vehicle to assist her in the important work she is doing. We are aiming for 7000$ to buy a reliable, safe car and insurance for a year. This will significantly relieve Kanahus of the stress of getting transportation to the front lines where she is an invaluable resource to her people.

If you can support this initiative, funds can be directed as follows:
etransfer funds to teresadiewert@shaw.ca or
Paypal for credit card payments: Click here..

If you have any questions about the initiative please email us: risingtide604@riseup.net. If you have information on a mechanically sound, four-wheel drive vehicle with winter tires available, please e-mail as well!

Thank you so much for your continued support of the work that Kanahus and so many others do to protect the earth and uphold Indigenous sovereignty.

Defend

The Camp of the Sacred Stones and the Red Warrior Camp have called for #NoDAPL Global Weeks of Action which will run from September 3-17th.

Over two thousand Indigenous land defenders and allies are currently camped out on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, physically blocking the route for the Dakota Access Pipeline, with the intention of protecting their land and water sources for generations to come and the immediate 18 million people who currently depend on the river as a primary water resource. Occupation – 5025 Imperial Street

Rising Tide Vancouver – CST stands in Solidarity with those facing eviction due to corporate profit and those experiencing homelessness, gentrification, terrible housing and totally unaffordable rents. (https://tentcityvancouver.wordpress.com/)

We echo the demands for 100% social housing at welfare and shelter rates at 58 W Hastings and an immediate moratorium on demovictions in the Metrotown area.

Gentrification is a climate justice issue.

Gentrification is a form of displacement based on land as a commodity rather than a human need. Land supports all forms of life and it’s being destroyed by massive resource extraction in the name of corporate profit, including the developers responsible for these displacements. Continue reading

Spring into Action!

We’re having a new members meeting on Wednesday March 23rd.

When: Wednesday April 20, 5-7pm
Where: Spartacus Books, 3378 Findlay Street (near Commercial/Broadway Station)

The open meeting will be a chance for you to find out more about Rising Tide: who we are, what we do and why we do it. We’ll talk about Rising Tide’s values, tactics and approach to organizing, go over what we’re working on at the moment, and answer any questions you have. The aim of the evening is for us all to get to know each other a bit, and to help you decide if Rising Tide is the group for you.

We encourage folks to read our basis of unity (http://risingtide604.ca/?page_id=2) and security culture document (http://risingtide604.ca/?p=1840) before the meeting, as we’ll be discussing them there.

If you have any questions about getting involved please email us at risingtide604@riseup.net. Also, please tell us if you have any accessibility needs for the meeting, and/or if you’re keen to get involved but can’t make that date, so we can let you know about future open meetings.

Please RSVP to risingtide604@riseup.net and let us know if you’re coming or if you’re unable to make it but would like information about another open meeting in future.

Looking forward to meet you soon,
Rising Tide collective

2015 – The Year in Review

We began 2015 not with an action but a publication that we had worked on for many months of the previous year. Our ‘Security Culture Guidelines’ document outlines our thoughts on developing a healthy ‘security culture’. Rather than become paranoid, we strive to follow a set of guidelines which allow us to organize effectively while maximizing our own, and others’, safety. We acknowledge that these guidelines are a work in progress. We made our 2015 Security Culture document public (http://risingtide604.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Security-Culture-Document-January-20151.pdf) so others could read it, consider its suggestions and make plans to organize safely amid the security state.

1In February over a hundred people attended our Madii Lii Pancakes Not Pipelines brunch fundraiser. The camp is located at the entrance to Madii Lii territory within the Gitxsan Nation, in “northwest BC”. On Aug. 26, 2014, the hereditary chiefs of the territory declared access to the territory closed to all fracked gas (LFG/LNG) pipeline development and other unauthorized industrial activity, and enacted the Luutkudziiwus Territorial Management Plan. They have set up a camp on the direct path of the TransCanada Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Line (PRGT), another LFG (Liquid Fracked Gas) pipeline proposal, and they still need funds and support – http://www.madiilii.com/

Mid-March saw our first direct action of the year. Continue reading

What we’re fundraising for:
Luutkuziiwus members involved in the Madii Lii Camp are working to raise awareness about fracking and LFG/LNG (Liquefied Fracked/Natural Gas) transmission in their territory. In 2016, they will be organizing awareness-building workshops in the heart of industrial wastelands, educating people about the effects of this destructive industry, and coordinating resistance with current and future allies.
